A percentage calculator for marks helps students quickly find what percentage they scored in an exam, test, or entire semester. Instead of manually dividing obtained marks by total marks and multiplying by 100, this free tool does it instantly. Simply enter your obtained marks and the maximum total marks, and get your percentage along with your grade equivalent.
In India, percentage of marks is one of the most commonly used metrics for academic performance evaluation — from school board exams like CBSE and ICSE to undergraduate and postgraduate university examinations. Your percentage determines eligibility for scholarships, college admissions, job applications, and government services.
The formula is straightforward: Percentage = (Obtained Marks ÷ Total Marks) × 100. For example, if you scored 432 out of 500, your percentage is (432 ÷ 500) × 100 = 86.4%. Our calculator also shows you the equivalent CGPA by dividing the percentage by 9.5, as per the formula used by CBSE and many Indian universities.
The tool also classifies your result into a grade category — Distinction (75%+), First Class (60–74%), Second Class (50–59%), Pass (40–49%), and Fail (below 40%) — as commonly used in Indian universities.
A percentage calculator for marks isn't only for students checking semester results. It's useful in a wide range of everyday situations:
A student scores 437 out of 500 in a board exam. Entering these values returns 87.4%, which our calculator classifies as a “Distinction.” The same student's sibling scored 358 out of 500 → 71.6% (First Class). Our tool also shows the approximate CGPA equivalent (percentage ÷ 9.5), so you can share results in whichever format the next form or admission portal expects. Because the calculation is instant and the categories are colour-coded, families find it much easier to set realistic revision targets than converting numbers on paper.
