CGPA stands for Cumulative Grade Point Average. It is a grading system widely used by Indian universities, including those affiliated to UGC (University Grants Commission), to evaluate a student's overall academic performance. Rather than expressing results as a simple percentage, the CGPA system assigns a grade point (usually on a 10-point scale) to each subject based on the marks obtained.
In India, the CBCS (Choice Based Credit System) adopted by most central and state universities uses a 10-point grading scale. Under this system, letter grades range from O (Outstanding = 10) down to F (Fail = 0). Your CGPA is the weighted average of all your grade points across all semesters.
To calculate your CGPA, multiply each subject's grade point by its credit hours, sum all those values, and divide by the total number of credit hours. If all subjects carry equal credits, CGPA is simply the average of all grade points. Our calculator supports both weighted (with credits) and simple (equal weight) calculation methods.
To convert CGPA to percentage, multiply your CGPA by 9.5. This formula is recommended by CBSE and many Indian universities. For example, a CGPA of 8.5 equals 8.5 × 9.5 = 80.75%. This percentage equivalent is often required when applying for jobs, higher education, or government services.
Indian universities and most international campuses use CGPA on a 10-point or 4-point scale to grade students. Knowing your CGPA in real time — and its percentage equivalent — is essential in these situations:
A student scoring 8, 9, 7.5, 8.5, and 9 grade points in five subjects has a CGPA of (8 + 9 + 7.5 + 8.5 + 9) ÷ 5 = 8.4. Converting via the CBSE formula gives 8.4 × 9.5 = 79.8%, which clears most “first class” job cut-offs. If the student wanted to reach a 9.0 CGPA after one more semester, our calculator makes it easy to iterate by adding a new subject row and testing different grade points before the exam.
